How do I know which herbs and supplements to feed?
Please feel free to call us for help and advice on ailments and remedies for horses and dogs. If you have a prognosis from your vet we can help with complementary remedies.

What is the best way to feed herbs and supplements?
Animals will happily graze on food stuffs that take their fancy while free to roam; we are just helping them obtain what they need. Most herbs and supplements can simply be added to a regular feed or meal, mix dried herbs and nutraceuticial supplements within the mixture. If it is a liquid herb pour it on top of the feed or meal at the time of feeding so that the liquid stays in the feed and doesn't just drop to the bottom of the feed bucket or bowl. Liquids can also be syringed for rapid absorption and fussy eaters. If you have an overweight animal that doesn't have a regular feed or meal, mix herbs and supplements with some chaff or some unmolassed sugar beet for a horse or in a slice of ham or chicken for a dog to soften the taste.

Can I feed more than one supplement at a time?
Yes you can, for example an active animal may benefit from a joint supplement and a conditioning vitamin and mineral mix. Be careful not to double up by feeding two products that will bring the same result, too much of a good thing is not good for any animal.

How much and how often? How long will it last?
Most herbal and supplement companies will have directions of how much and how often to feed. Dried herbs take a little longer to get into the system and therefore take longer to take affect, however in the longer term they can be more cost effective. Liquids and powders can be quicker acting depending on the individual animal and what herb or supplement you are feeding or for what symptom.

Do animals become immune or addicted to feed additives?
Animals do not become addicted to herbs or supplements, they may benefit from a break from feeding, in order to ensure that the appropriate results are being realised, but they will not become immune to the affect.

Are some animals allergic to herbs and feed additives?
Very rarely, if your animal has shown allergic reactions to some products in the past introduce any new additives gradually. If it is a product applied to the animal's skin test a small area before regular use.

My horse / dog are on medication from the vet?
In the main herbal and homeopathic remedies have a complementary effect with pharmaceutical drugs, in fact many drugs originate from natural substances. However if you have any concerns consult your veterinary surgeon, some vets take quite an interest in herbal, homeopathic and complementary medicine, in many circumstances science and nature can work hand in hand.

Are there any banned substances for competition?
Currently the only banned substance under most competition rules is Valerian, it is present in a lot of 'calming' products. Citronella has been banned in fly spray; however it is within the law to purchase citronella oil to add to commercial sprays and for people who make up their own fly spray mixtures.
